A Custom Necklace and a Gorilla

Modeled by one of our household gorillas, this is a custom necklace I made as a gift for a friend a few months ago. She’s allergic to metal, so the entire necklace is metal-free. the center stone is an oval of crazy horse stone, and the remainder of the piece is a varied pattern of black agate rondelles, dumortierite barrels, tumbled pietersite nuggets, picture jasper spacers, small red crystals, and silver leaf jasper rounds strung on black silk. The clasp is a wonderful black agate toggle clasp that I bought from FMG specifically for this piece. Here are some more shots (sans gorilla); click to enlarge:

Oh, and the gorilla? There’s a standing rule in our house that a gorilla must always occupy a place of prominence. This guy is one of two that share the top of our TV with our Wii sensor bar.

New Item: Guardian of the Soul

I originally designed this piece for Mer to wear at craft fairs and large outings, a bit of a shield against the large crowds.  It’s a combination of aesthetics and my belief in the powers of certain gemstones.

The center bead is a gorgeous hunk of black tourmaline, and it is balanced top and bottom with sterling and garnet.  The chain is plenty strong to bear the weight of the pendant, but fine enough to provide a balance to the chunky center piece.

Available in our Etsy shop and at this weekend’s craft fair!

New Item: Intergalactic Ice Cream

Just in time for the end of this east coast heat wave: the newest addition to our Etsy shop, Intergalactic Ice Cream, was inspired by the July Big Damn Crafters Challenge, Ice Planets.

The Big Damn Crafters are a group of Etsians who have banded together over their love of Joss Whedon’s series Firefly and its sister movie Serenity; the focus of this month’s challenge is the delectable dessert Ice Planet.

New Item: Betty in Blue

I’ll admit…all I can think of when I see this bracelet is Betty Rubble with her cute little wooly mammoth vacuum cleaner.  I’d like to think that if she had some spending cash hidden away from Barney, this is the sort of thing she’d buy.

Sterling silver, black agate, and amazonite come together to make a gloriously stone-age statement. It’s practically a page right out of modern stone-age history.

New Item: Mistress of Half an Island

(c) 2008 Sweet Tarragon

Swarovski crystals and pearls, sterling silver, and seafoam glass make this a necklace fit for a queen. A scalloped sterling hook clasp bears to weight of the glory.

Mer is the keeper of the creative writing brain, and therefore she is usually the genius behind the names and descriptions in the Etsy store.  She was a bit burned out by the time we got to this one, and could only tell me that it reminded her of Queen Elizabeth.  Is it fit for a queen in your life?

Raw Earth Bracelet - Back in Stock!

(c) 2008 Sweet Tarragon

The very popular Raw Earth bracelet is back in stock in our Etsy Shop! This bracelet was hand-crafted from hourglass-shaped agate in green, blue, and purple tones, black agate spacers, coated copper wire, and antiqued copper findings.

I love the exposed copper wire and the earthy tones of the agate in this piece - coarse, yet vulnerable; untamed but polished.

The Sweetest Thing

Mint Chocolate Chunk Necklace, (c) 2008 Sweet TarragonThis is not a new piece, but it’s a story that deserves telling…

Last July, I came into an inheritance: a box of jewelry my grandfather had been keeping for me since my grandmother’s passing 15 years ago. It contained 20 or 30 different necklaces and earring sets, many of which were unfortunately deteriorating. I set it aside with plans to take pictures of what remained for a scrapbook that I could someday share with my kid sister.

Earlier this year, with my beading frenzy in full bloom, I rediscovered the box and realized that I could apply my new-found love of jewelry-making with many of those precious memories to make pieces that are wearable and carry a significant amount of meaning.

Mint Chocolate Chunk is the first in that series, and a faded brown acrylic necklace has been transformed into an agate, jasper, sterling silver, and turquoise delight.

Mint Chocolate Chunk is available here in our Etsy store!
